When women are diagnosed with breast cancer, many times they have a lot of stress and anxiety and don’t know what to do. They often don’t want to think about the future, but with good survival rates, they should consider the outlook for their long-term appearance. In his book, Childers discusses some of the considerations for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and some of the first steps they should take after they are diagnosed. He provides an overview of options for breast reconstruction after mastectomy and he gives answers to some of the most common questions that patients will have after being diagnosed.

Childers said, “I see a number of patients that come in and they are in tears because they’ve been diagnosed with cancer. They’re going to lose their breast and they have no idea what they’re going to look like. Once we get through with talking about some reconstruction options, they leave the office feeling much better about what’s going to happen. Then they can go to their general surgeon and consider their options.”

Childers’ book was launched to coincide with “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. He describes in laymen’s terms several options for breast reconstruction, ranging from insertion of tissue expanders and implants, to use of the patient’s own tissue to reconstruct breasts that have been surgically removed.
